West Town Residence – Chicago, IL

The design for this residence aims to provide a smooth transition between the interior and exterior spaces as views to the garden are experienced throughout the home. Varied platforms of ipe decking at the lower level provide a comfortable division of a tight space. A birch tree rises out of the lower deck to encourage privacy and enclosure. A decorative pebble garden brightens the lowest cavity of the garden. Removing a portion of the masonry wall at the garage unified the two gardens and opened the views from the interior. Bands of sedum plantings, a series of elevated conifers and grasses in aluminum containers, and strips of ipe wood anchor the roof garden design. These details are thoughtfully interspersed in each space to unify the design and embolden the garden experience.
