Mid-Century Modern – Highland Park, IL

This two acre site rests in a woodland ecosystem typical of the surrounding landscape at the southern end of Lake Michigan. A meandering drive arrives at a Keck and Keck mid-century modern classic intended to blend with its natural surroundings. The landscape design reconnects this residence with the woodland garden. Near the front entrance, the fine texture of the oak sedge is amplified in a mass planting to create a native lawn embedded by a thoughtfully placed bluestone boulder. A witch-hazel tree planted at the corner of the home matures to a horizontal branch structure that follows the low-profile plane of the home’s architecture. Special care was made to re-lay the original slate tiles in the courtyard where custom concrete containers lift Aspen trees pass the roofline and provoke the senses to the larger context.
