Big Star – Chicago, IL

The design intent for the Big Star Restaurant garden patio is to create a welcoming green space for patrons ordering at the to-go counter. A series of ornamental trees sit elevated in plant containers to create shade while dining at adjacent tables. Two mature birch trees rest at grade secured by ‘tree grate’ benches. A casual dining experience is provided by the variety of seating and the intentionally designed open spaces. Because of the high traffic area the garden is developed with enduring materials. Old Chicago clay brick pavers are used to root the new space to the historic Wicker Park neighborhood. Black locust lumber is a tangible connection to Big Star’s interior aesthetic. The result is a garden that features thoughtfully assembled, sustainable materials that stitch together the Big Star establishment and the surrounding community.
